Adriel L. Schaffer, 93, formerly of Mt. Vernon, Indiana, passed away surrounded by his family in St. Peters, Missouri, on January 29, 2025. He was born on September 2, 1931, to Adriel and Pauline (Curtis) Schaffer.
Adriel graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1949. He was recognized as an outstanding athlete, receiving numerous accolades and an induction into the high school’s Hall of Fame. In 1951, he married Vivian R. Stern, and together they raised four children. Their marriage lasted 56 years until her passing in 2007.
Adriel worked for twenty years at Mt. Vernon Oil Refinery and then General Electric Plastics. In 1969, he joined Metropolitan Life, where he earned many awards and national recognition. He then worked as an independent insurance broker until he retired to care for his wife.
Adriel was involved in the Mount Vernon community as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 81 for many years. He served as an elder at Black’s Chapel Church and as a trustee of Black’s Township Cemetery. He was known for his affable sense of humor and his generosity toward neighbors and friends.
Adriel was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his sisters, Emily Raab and Paula Bixler; his daughter-in-law, Deborah Schaffer; his nephew, Joseph Bixler; and his grandson, Bryce Schaffer.
He is survived by his brother, John (Barbara) Schaffer; his children, Max (Peggy) Schaffer, Nick Schaffer, Heidi (Rick) Henderson, and Dannah Schaffer; his niece, Vickie (Rick) Weber; his nephew, Rodney Bixler; his grandchildren, Jennifer (Nathan) Scearce, Andrea (Charlie) Butler, Ryan Friday, Lindy (Shaun) Adams, and Lee Henderson; as well as nine great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Black’s Township Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest. You can make checks out to Black’s Cemetery, Inc. and mail them to 637 Pine Tree Drive, Mt. Vernon, IN, 47620.
A service will be held at First Free Will Baptist Church, 814 S. Woodlawn, in O’Fallon, Missouri, on February 6 at 2 p.m. An additional service will be held in Mt. Vernon, Indiana, on Memorial Day weekend, with details to be announced.
