Barbara Ann Berndt, a beloved educator, mother, grandmother, and nurturing soul, departed this life on September 16, 2024, in Chesterfield, Missouri. Born on July 18, 1936, in Ottawa, Illinois, Barbara made an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who were to know her.
Her journey as a teacher began with a remarkable chapter teaching for two years at an Air Force Base in Japan. Upon returning to the United States, she continued her vocation with passion, bringing warmth and creativity to her students in the Chicago area. It was there that she encountered a true Hallmark movie moment when she met her husband, Carl S. Berndt, Jr., embarking on a foundation of love that would shape their lives together.
Barbara’s academic pursuits were impressive, having earned a Master's degree in Education from Northwestern University, followed by a second Master's degree in Counseling from the University of Missouri–St. Louis. Her commitment to education reflected her belief in nurturing minds and hearts, a philosophy she carried throughout her life.
As a grandmother, Barbara was nothing short of extraordinary. She cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren—taking them on shopping sprees for sugary treats, delighting in their laughter at the movies, and offering endless spoiling that only a loving grandma could provide. Her simple joys included feeding the geese at the lake, a cherished pastime that highlighted her gentle spirit and appreciation for nature.
Barbara's personality radiated kindness, sweetness, and an unwavering love for those around her. A devoted member of her church, Bonhomme Presbyterian, she enjoyed participating in Bible study, singing in the church choir, and playing the piano. She was also a Deacon and Stephen's Minister. Her compassionate heart extended beyond her family, as she dedicated time as a tutor to special needs adults, making a difference in their lives.
In her leisure, Barbara found joy in the rhythm of life—enjoying square dancing with her husband and even taking disco lessons together, an embodiment of their love and companionship.
She is survived by her loving children, Carl S. Berndt III, Alex Berndt, and Julie Kezele, along with her cherished grandchildren: Jim Kezele, Michelle Messmer (Jon), James Berndt, Sarah Berndt, and Sandra Berndt, and great-grandchildren Charlie and Henry Messmer. Additionally, she leaves behind her sister-in-law, Kathy Hinkey-Parsons, and several nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl S. Berndt, Jr., son, Gus Berndt, son-in-law, Jeffrey Kezele, daughter-in-law, LeAnn Berndt, brother, Tom Hinkey, and her parents, William and Helen Hinkey. Each of these individuals cherished Barbara’s gentle spirit and profound love for family and friends.
Celebrating a life well-lived, Barbara Ann Berndt will be remembered not only for her contributions to education and her loving presence as a mother and grandmother but also for the countless lives she touched with her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love.
