Barbara Jean Hibschman, 81, died Sunday, May 5, 2024 at Progress West Hospital in O’Fallon, Missouri.
She leaves her beloved husband of 59 years, James Hibschman, and two children and their spouses, John (and Jane) Hibschman of Millville, NJ and Christan (and JD) Perona of Des Peres, MO. She had four grandchildren: JT and Jorja Hibschman, and Clayton and Kharis Perona. She also leaves her brother, Stephen (Sue) Benedict. Barbara had many friends and impacted many lives.
Barbara graduated from Corning High School in Corning, Ohio and began her undergraduate studies at Fort Wayne Bible College (Fort Wayne, IN). She worked at Smith Walbridge Camp (Syracuse, IN) where she met Jim. They dated throughout college and graduated together from Findlay College (now University of Findlay) in Ohio. She graduated with a degree in elementary education and later earned a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. After they were married, Barbara and Jim ministered in various states and countries.
Barbara devoted her life to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, teaching, speaking, and writing to share the Gospel. Throughout her lifetime, she traveled to five continents and 30 countries on short-term missions trips. Serving alongside Jim who pastored various churches, she used her gift of teaching and music to compliment his work with each congregation. Most recently, she traveled to Kenya in 2023 and 2024 to help build connections between First Free Church and the Samburu tribe.
Most importantly, Barbara loved Jesus with her whole heart. She walked with Him daily, knew Him well, and continually sought to read Scripture, pray, and study more about her Lord. She was disciplined and strategic about Scripture, loved to sing and play hymns of praise, and continually encouraged Jim, her children, and her grandchildren to follow Christ with their whole hearts.
