Calvin Hardy Carter

December 16, 1924 — September 27, 2019

Calvin Hardy Carter was born December 16, 1924 at home in Ellsinore, Missouri.

The Carter family announces with great sadness the passing of their beloved Calvin Hardy Carter on September 27, 2019 at 6:40 am at the age of 94. Calvin leaves behind a loving wife, Marcia, with whom he was faithfully married to for 72 years. Calvin was an amazing man who touched the lives of everyone he met. He was loving, patient and kind. So full of life and joy. He is a true example of how life should be lived. His presence never failed to lighten up the room. The impact he has left on his children and grandchildren is immeasurable. Calvin prided himself in being the best father and grandfather he could be; his family was his entire world. There was also a love within him for those he had just met. He had a way about him that made everyone feel like family. He will be deeply missed by all that knew him. While the pain cuts deep and the mourning goes on we will do our best to cherish and celebrate the wonderful life that he had. Below are some moments from Calvin's life that helped mold and shape the man that we all know and love.

As a kid Calvin delivered lumber to the train station in town on a horse drawn wagon. A handicapped man in town grabbed the bridal one day and stopped the horse who had been spooked from running wild with the wagon and Calvin. From there he went on to work in his brother Frank's saw mill, until at the age of 15 he hitchhiked to Saint Louis where he got a job in a factory and lived with his brother Luke and his wife Mildred. During World War II he served in the Navy as a gunner's mate on board ship. He circled the globe without crossing the equator and always remarked about docking in Kolkata, India and how he enjoyed his shipmates. After the war he teamed up with his brothers Luke and Carlos in a sawmill business in Illinois. Then he drove a truck for about 30 years hauling cars all over the country with brothers Raymond and Carl for the Ford motor company in St. Louis, he purchased three of his own trucks and employed two other drivers. He began selling real estate in his 40s and quickly became the top agent at Armbruster Realty and remained one of the top agents in the St. Louis region for years. Finding success in real estate he and his son Mike opened Sunrise Realty. He loved what he did and said he never felt like it was work at all because he enjoyed it so much. He was a member of the Scottish rite, a 32nd° Mason, a Shriner, and a member of Eastern Star. He was loved by family and friends; if asked "how you doing?" He'd often say "going uphill carrying a heavy load." With a smile on his face. He seemed to have a million humorous sayings, with a great sense of humor. He loved partying, fishing, camping, vacationing, boating and water skiing with family and friends. Calvin enjoyed sitting around a fire and swapping stories. He was quite the story-teller.

Calvin is survived by his wife, Marcia Carter, his daughter, Donna Atchison; and son, Calvin Michael Carter, six grandchildren: Michael, Chad, Megan, Nick, Clayton and Ryan, six great grandchildren: Hannah, Jack, Logan, Colt, Ginger and Ryder and many other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; A. F. and Flora Carter, and eight siblings: Monroe, Frank, Luke, Raymond, Carlos, Carl, Sarah and Viola.
