Debra Koenig

August 1, 1959 — June 29, 2016

Debra Kaye Koenig (nee Dretke), 56, of Dardenne Prairie, Missouri, passed away June 29, 2016.

Deb was born August 1, 1959 in Eket, Nigeria, the daughter of James and Barbara (Biar) Dretke, who were called to serve as missionaries in West Africa. After growing up primarily on the mission field, Deb attended college in Texas, first at Concordia College, where she met her future husband, Greg, and then at the University of Texas (Austin), where she earned a bachelor's degree in nursing. Following her graduation, she worked as a nurse for fourteen years.

Deb was a good and faithful friend, companion, mentor and role model. She delighted in traveling and in spending time talking and playing games with family and close friends. She loved being Mom to Stephanie, Lexi, Adam and Kate, and she inspired and motivated them to live their lives with purpose. She readily embraced the roles of choir mom, sports mom, cheerleader mom, band mom (plus drumline mom), and dance team mom. One of Deb's favorite pastimes was designing photo books online, which she had printed and then gave as gifts to friends and family.

Above all, Deb was a woman of faith. She was a deeply committed follower of Jesus Christ and responded to the call of the Spirit to serve in the church as a choir member, Sunday school teacher, and high school youth leader; she was also active in women's groups and Sunday morning women's Bible studies.

Deb married Greg Koenig on January 3, 1981; in 2016 the couple celebrated God's rich blessings on their marriage of 35 years. She is survived by Greg, and by their children—Stephanie (Craig) Struckmann of St. Peters, MO, Alexandra (Eric) Shafer of Grimes, IA, Adam Koenig of O'Fallon, MO, Kathryn Koenig of O'Fallon, MO; her parents—James and Barbara Dretke of Hilltop Lakes, TX; and her siblings—Diana (Mick) Baldys of North Richland Hills, TX, Douglas (DeeDee) Dretke of Huntsville, TX, David (Michelle) Dretke of San Antonio, TX and Denise (Paul) Lambert of Querétaro, Mexico; as well as four (soon to be five) grandchildren.
