Donald G. Downer, age 92, of Saint Charles, Missouri passed away on Friday, May 1, 2020. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 15, 1927 to Adolf and Josephine Downer (nee Ostombarski).
Donald was married to Lois Downer for 57 loving years. He served for 22 years in the United States Navy, which included service during WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam. Donald was assigned to 3 different ships USS Fremont, USS Mispillion and the USS Delta. The USS Fremont was part of the Sixth Fleet that toured the Mediterranean. Some of the ports of call included Greece, France, and Italy. He also spent time in Cuba and Okinawa while serving in the Navy.
After retiring from the Navy, Donald went on to work at the U.S. Army Records Center. He then went to work for the US Postal Service and retired in 1989. After retirement, Don and Lois enjoyed to travel, especially to Florida and the East Coast. They also explored the U.S. by taking several trips a year through the Elderhostel educational program.
Donald was an active member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 267/161. He was a member of N.A.R.F.E. (National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association), Chapter 1229. He volunteered at Lambert Airport for the U.S.O. Donald was a member of United Methodist Church of the Shepherd.
Donald is survived by his daughters, Dawn (Richard) Proffitt, and Janice (Robert) McCutchen; his grandchildren, Melissa Krekeler, Julianne (Weston) Sanford, Michelle James, and Robert Joyce; his great-grandchildren, Callie Sanford, Wyatt Sanford, Hailey Krekeler, Luke Krekeler, Trinity James, Devon James, and Taylor Miller. He will be dearly missed by many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Joanne Downer; his father, Adolf Downer; and his mother, Josephine Downer; and his siblings, Angela (Roy) Richards Sr., Harriet (Dan) Shackle, Jean (Howard) Moehrle, Mary (George) Eckmann, Sally (Jack) Cissa, Erv (Shirley) Downer, Raymond (Mary Kay) Downer, and Leonard (Florence) Downer.
Services will be private.
