Donald J. Petty, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on March 21, 2025, at the age of 80 - just one week following Alice and Don's 50th Wedding Anniversary. Born on February 11, 1945, in Rochester, New York, Donald touched the lives of many during his quiet yet impactful journey on this earth.
A dedicated professional, Donald worked for the State of Missouri in the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, where he made significant contributions to the community. He was a proud alumnus of the State University of New York, earning his Bachelor’s Degree before furthering his education at Southern Illinois University, where he received his Master's Degree.
Don's commitment to service extended beyond his career; he honorably served in the United States Air Force, a chapter of his life marked by dedication and pride. He will be rendered Military Honors at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, a testament to his sacrifice and service to his country.
He was a man of deep faith, serving and loving the Lord with his whole being. In his younger years, Donald found joy in singing at Grace Community Chapel alongside friends and became a cherished member of the Missouri Choral Society. His voice was a reflection of his gentle spirit, and his love for music was evident to all who knew him. Don loved to read; his bookshelf was filled with over 200 books...he had interest in faith based novels, biblical reference, prophesy and end times studies, as well as psychology/counseling reference books that he used when he was working as a counselor.
Don was not only soft-spoken but also had a heart filled with love for his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Alice Petty, whose companionship was a source of comfort and joy throughout their years together. He leaves behind his two daughters, Janet Oppermann and Julie Oppermann Knie, who carry forward his legacy with their love and strength. His grandchildren—Jace Knie, Cole Knie, Nicholas (Monica) Knight, Ian Franson, and Chris (Raven) Franson—along with his great-grandchild, Phoebe Lynn Franson, were treasures in his life, each of whom he cherished deeply. Additionally, he is survived by siblings Richard Petty and Carol Petty-Paro, who will forever remember him as a loving brother.
Donald was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Petty, his mother, Gladys Petty, and a sibling, Robert Petty. Their memories live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
The celebration of Donald's life will be held on March 30, 2025, at the Newcomer Funeral Home in St. Peters, Missouri. Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM, followed by the Funeral Service at 4:00 PM.
In every interaction, Donald radiated kindness and humility. His love for dogs, who were his daily companions for many years, mirrored the loyalty and affection he showed to his family and friends. He will be remembered not only for his gentleness and strength but also for the love he so freely shared with everyone around him.
Though he has departed from this world, Donald J. Petty's spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
