Dr. Mary Jane Hynes, age 69, of Saint Peters, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 in Saint Peters, Missouri. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on February 1, 1954 to John and Ann Hynes (nee Walsh).
Mary taught elementary education at Transfiguration School in Florissant, MO and St. Joseph School in Cottleville, MO. She also taught religious studies at Florida International University in Miami. and Avila University in Kansas City before she retired. She received her PhD in Liberation Theology guided by Gustavo Gutierrez. She was a scholar who read a great deal and was passionate about human rights. She published a book entitled, Surrender, in 1999 about spiritual health and freedom. Mary traveled extensively internationally and lived in Peru for a time and she had many friends all over the US who enjoyed her quick wit and Irish sense of humor. She was also a Parish Religion Education Coordinator and St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in Oakville and Holy Redeemer in Webster Groves. Mary was also an animal lover and cared especially for her dogs and the current treatment of elephants. Mary suffered multiple health problems over the years and leaves behind Sophie, her beloved standard poodle.
Mary is survived by her Two Sisters, Margaret T. (Billy) Culbertson of Saint Peters, MO, Ann Hynes; Brother, John (Joanna Ryan) Hynes; Nephew, Michael Culbertson; Uncle, Dr. John E. Walsh; and a host of cousins.
She was preceded in death by her Father, John Patrick Hynes; and, Mother, Ann Jane Hynes.
