Florine Charla "Flo" Thomas, 91, of Ballwin, MO passed away on December 25, 2020. Flo was born on March 7, 1929, in Denver, CO to the late Joseph and Margaret (Etherton) Hand.
Flo has been described as a survivor, born at the outset of the Great Depression, raised through the 1930s in a Denver orphanage with her late brother Joe Lee Hand, she then entered the Foster Care Program as an adolescent in 1940. She later met and married Norman David Thomas, a WWII GI from Pennsylvania who had been discharged in Denver after the War. They were married in October 1946. He preceded her in death in 2012 at age 90. In 1981, Flo faced a crisis with cancer yet lived for another 40 years - a survivor again. Her final challenge arrived when she contracted COVID-19. She lost that fight on Christmas Day, 2020.
Flo's life was complicated and at times difficult, nevertheless she found a way to find love and belonging, most of all through her lifelong relationship with Norman Thomas and her three surviving children, David A. Thomas of St. Peters, MO, Daniel E. Thomas of Bowie, MD, and Lynn Ann Madonia of Henderson, NV.
She leaves a legacy as an inspiration for resiliency and overcoming life's challenges. Flo is also survived by seven grandchildren, Michele Palmgren, David Thomas Jr., Christopher Thomas, Jenifer Price, Bryan Thomas, Brett Thomas, and Nora Thomas; six great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
A private celebration of Flo's life will occur later. Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions in St. Peters is assisting the family.
