Gilbert Eugene Smith, Sr.

January 10, 1953 — August 6, 2024

O'Fallon, MO

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gilbert Eugene Smith, Sr., a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many.  Gene was born on January 10, 1953, in St. Louis, Missouri, and entered the Gates of Heaven on Tuesday, August 6, 2024.

Gene led a fulfilling life, dedicated to his family and his career. He pursued his education at Central High School, graduating with the class of 1971. It was during his high school years that he met his high school sweetheart, Paula Moss, whom he lovingly married on June 3, 1972.

In his professional life, Gene excelled as a Medical Warehouse Manager for Cardinal Health Care and Midwest Medical Supply, where he dedicated his time and expertise until his well-deserved retirement on October 7, 2016.

While Gene found joy in his work, his true passions lay in simple pleasures. He found solace in activities like fishing, hunting, camping and gardening, with a special place in his heart for Cardinal's Baseball. However, above all, Gene cherished spending quality time with his grandchildren and his fur-baby, Josie, for whom he was a constant source of love and support.

A man of remarkable dedication and commitment, Gene's proudest accomplishments extended beyond the workplace. He coached his son's baseball teams for many years and managed Surrey Lane Ballpark during this time. He also actively participated in his daughter's cheerleading events and marching band competitions, showing unwavering support for his children in all their endeavors.

In the hearts of those who knew him, Gene will forever hold a cherished place. He is survived by his loving wife, Paula Smith, his two sons Gilbert Eugene (Nicole) Smith II, Paul A. (Rachel) Smith, his two daughters Angel K. Michael, Monica M. (Matthew) Stufflebean, and his 11 adoring grandchildren - Kaylynn, Melanie Jean, Mia, Marissa, Matthew II, Peyton, Savanna, Austin, Kelsey, Aiden, and Isabella.

Gene also leaves behind his sister Helen (Curt) Shephard, brothers Larry (Pam) Smith, Robert (Sue) Smith, sister-in-law Sheila (Mike) Brown, brothers-in-law Marty Moss, Monte Moss, along with his godson Thomas Kamp, goddaughter Ashley Potter, and numerous other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

In the embrace of eternal peace, Gene reunites with his beloved parents, Gilbert and Helen (Milton) Smith and brother Charles Smith, who preceded him in death. His legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Services to honor Gene's memory will take place on August 12, 2024, with visitation from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at 837 Mid Rivers Mall Dr, St. Peters, MO, and the funeral service on August 13, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the same location.  Gene will be laid to rest at Mt. Zion Cemetery in O'Fallon, MO.
