Herschel A. Blume

June 17, 1944 — November 30, 2023

Herschel A. Blume, age 79, of Saint Louis, Missouri passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2023 in Bridgeton, Missouri. He was born in Saint Louis, Missouri on June 17, 1944 to David and Laura Blume (nee Wolff).

Herschel is survived by his brothers, Sanford (Louise) Blume of Wildwood, MO, Bryan (Bonnie) Blume of Troy, MO, and Lawrence Blume of Overland, MO; sister-in-law, Deena Blume; nieces, Rebecca (Brad) Hall, Jacqueline (Andy) Bezdichek, Marsha (Jonathan) Medows, and Sari Blume; nephew, David Blume; and a host of other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley May Blume; brother Ronnie Blume; father, David Blume; and mother, Laura Blume.

Herschel was dearly loved and will be greatly missed, especially by his brothers. His brother Bryan shares the following recollection, which exemplifies Herschel's selflessness and strength of character, even from a very young age:

"Although the first memory I have of my brother Hershey was more than 70 years ago, I can remember it as clearly as if it was yesterday. It was a beautiful spring day, at least it started out that way. Morning glory flowers were in bloom on the south fence, and I could smell the fragrance of the lilacs near the north fence. My brothers and I were playing in the yard for about an hour when the sun disappeared and the sky darkened. Soon the wind picked up, trees swayed and we could see lightning and hear thunder in the distance, which seemed to be approaching us rapidly. We all ran in the house and closed the back door. Hershey, who was nine years old and my other older brother, Ronnie, who was seven, watched out the back door window as the wind began howling loudly, and the trees swayed violently. I was only five years old, too short to see out of the back door window so I watched from the kitchen window. Suddenly Hershey said, "Where is Sandy?" Since we were looking at the tree tops, swaying violently, and looking at the lightning in the sky, nobody noticed little one year old Sandy was still outside. Ronnie quickly spotted him and said he's outside under the apple tree. Suddenly the back door flew open, Hershey took off like a bullet, and grabbed Sandy and carried him in the house in seconds. No sooner than I heard Ronnie slam the back door shut, I saw the apple tree fall right where Sandy was sitting not more than five seconds ago. That was the first time I saw a real live hero in action, and I knew that as long as Hershey was around that he would never let anything bad happen to me or any of his brothers."
