A true officer and a gentleman. Jim, a retired Army LTC, spent 20 years in service. He flew two-plus-tours in Vietnam as an Army aviator and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star metal, as well as numerous certificates and commendations.
After retiring from the Army, Jim served as Chief of Staff for a Congressman in the US House of Representatives. He parlayed his experience as an Army aviator and his knowledge of Capitol Hill into a managerial position with The Boeing Company in Washington, DC, specializing in military aviation programs. After retiring a second time, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, caring for their Lakeland Terriers, and playing golf…a lot.
In addition to his military experience, Jim earned both a BA and an MBA from IU-Bloomington. He was grounded in reality, kind, generous, keenly observant of people and their interactions, and served as a role model for many family members.
With his fun-loving sense of humor, he could be a prankster at times, but he always remained a gentleman and respectful of others. Jim was a man of integrity, optimism, and quiet strength. He was courteous and grateful to everyone, especially his parents, Jesse and Letta Kanouse, who provided him with a wonderful life. He appreciated his constant and loyal friends; and he dearly loved his wife, Eileen Wiegert.
After a short illness, Jim died at home with his wife by his side. He was interred, with full military honors, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen, and two adult daughters from his previous marriage and their respective families. He will be remembered fondly by his nephews, brothers/sisters-in-law, and lifelong friends.
