Jo Ann Piening, age 78, of Saint Peters, Missouri passed away on Saturday, February 29, 2020. She was born in Saint Louis, Missouri on December 6, 1941. She was the daughter of Alvin and Cecelia Rademacher (nee O'Neil).
Jo Ann was married to Howard Piening in 1964. She and Howard enjoyed many great adventures: boating, traveling, and living in Florida for several years. Jo Ann always looked forward to holidays and family gatherings. She owned and operated her own business for many years. She also enjoyed working at an auto auction and selling real estate. She retired at age 63. Upon retirement she volunteered at retirement communities and food pantries. Jo Ann lived in Bellemeade Manor, a 55+ community in St. Peters where she made many friends. Some of her favorite activities included playing cards, bingo and sitting on her front porch visiting with friends.
Jo Ann was a real fighter. At age 63 she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and was given less than a year to live. Despite the doctors prognosis, Jo Ann was determined to beat the odds. With her positive attitude and determination, she successfully beat the initial diagnosis and several recurrences. She was an inspiration to all. In fact, she was asked by the cancer center to speak to incoming patients about her experience.
Jo Ann fiercely loved her family. She is survived by her children, John (Annette) Holtman, Joan (Christopher) Aleman, and Mary (Brian) Piening-Lewis; her grandchildren, Rachel Holtman, Jared Holtman, Heather (Chris) Smith, Megan (Dan) Dwyer, Joseph Aleman, and Mabrie Lewis; and her great-grandchildren, Hadley Smith, Carsen Smith, and Caden Dwyer. She will be greatly missed by family, friends and all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Piening; her father, Alvin Rademacher; her mother, Cecelia Rademacher; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Piening.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm followed by a funeral ceremony at 6:00 pm on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 837 Mid Rivers Mall Drive, St. Peters, Missouri 63376 (636-875-1200). Interment will be private.
