Secured with the Sacraments of the Holy Mother Church, Joanne Otten Basso, a beloved wife and mother, passed away surrounded by her family Saturday, June 1st, 2024. She was blessed to live eighty-nine years. Born to Joseph and Margaret (Burke) Otten, and sister to the late David Otten. Joanne grew up in St. Louis, attended Laboure High School, graduated from St. John's Hospital School of Nursing and then went on to become an OR and OB nurse and thus began her life-long practice of serving others. Joanne was the beloved wife of the late Louis N. Basso Sr. She was a loving mother to Nina (Joseph) Zeigler, Louis (Michelle) Basso Jr., Nicholas (Tammy) Basso and Amy (David) Surofchek. She was a dear grandmother (Baba) to Blake Surofchek, Carter Surofchek, Charlie Surofchek and Heidi Zeigler.
Joanne was a dedicated Catholic and long-time member of St. Alban Roe Catholic Church. She made God the center of her family, and always put God and family above her own wants and needs. She ensured faith and religion was an integral part of her kid's daily life, and would remind us often that we are IN this world, but we are not OF this world. She had our backs through all of life's conflicts and struggles.
Joanne volunteered her time to be a school nurse where her children attended school and later established a school nursing program for Incarnate Word Parish School in Chesterfield and helped establish nursing programs for other grade schools. Joanne enjoyed many family vacations at St. Pete's Beach, Florida and was a big fan of ocean cruises. She would say her greatest accomplishment in life was raising four wonderful children, and she loved nothing more than being surrounded by her family. She loved hosting big family dinners and celebrations, playing bingo with her cousins at the Saint Libory Schlambach Festival and the occasional Manhattan with her husband. Joanne cherished time with her grandkids who came to visit her often. She will be missed by friends and family who know her. Joanne would often say "Life is a blink of the eye compared to eternity", and with Christian hope we have faith that she will be spending eternity with Our Lord.
