John David Hartman, age 98, passed away at the home of his daughter on Thursday, June 13, 2024, in Saint Peters, Missouri with his family by his side. He was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania on April 26, 1926, to Clarence and Pearl Hartman (nee Mountz).
He lived most of his life in Carlisle where he met and married, the love of his life, Eva L. (Miller) Hartman on October 21, 1953. They were married for almost 69 years. John felt at home in the outdoors—whether working in his garden, taking a walk, sitting on the porch swing, visiting the mountains or the ocean—he was in his element. For fun, he was always ready to bowl or play checkers and usually won at both. He was generous to a fault and never met a stranger. His laugh was infectious as he found humor in the smallest things. He loved animals and was known to feed a stray or two.
John worked most of his life as a fork-lift operator at Mechanicsburg Naval Defense Depot. He received many outstanding performance and achievement awards retiring in 1991 after 39 years of service.
But his greatest legacy was his strong faith in God which he instilled into his family. His life was a living testimony to God’s faithfulness. He was a founding member of Bethel Assembly in Carlisle where he attended many years and served on the church Board. He had a heart for missions and those in need as seen in his many charitable gifts. Even though dementia marred his final years, his faith in God never wavered. He is finally at peace with his Heavenly Father.
John is survived by his two Daughters, Velva E. (Jerry) Wilgus of Wichita, KS; Beverly A. (Michael) Wilgus of Saint Peters, MO; Six Grandsons, Nathan (Stacy) Wilgus, Jason (Ashley) Wilgus, Jody Wilgus, Michael (Lauren) Wilgus, Jeffrey Wilgus, Timothy Wilgus; three Great-Grandsons, Tyler Hall, Drake Wilgus, Jonah Wilgus; three Great-Granddaughters, Zoe Wilgus, Leila Wilgus, Sunny Wilgus; two Great-Great-Grandsons, Ronan and Benjamin Hall; Sister, Ethel Crozier; Sister-InLaw, Eldora (Gary) Blacksmith; and a host of other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva (Miller) Hartman; mother, Pearl E. Hartman; father, Clarence F. Hartman; three brothers, Sam Warner, Paul Hartman, Clarence Hartman, Jr.
