Lowell Byron Zea, a beloved figure in his community, passed away on February 5, 2025, in Dardenne Prairie, Missouri. Born on September 5, 1934, in Monmouth, Illinois, Lowell made a significant impact through his career and personal life.
After graduating from Monmouth High School in 1953, where he excelled in both football and basketball, Lowell pursued his education with a passion for teaching. He earned a Bachelor of Education degree in 1962 and a Master of Science in Education in 1964, both from Western Illinois University. He began his career as a high school teacher and coach in West Dundee, Illinois, from 1963 to 1965. Following his initial teaching endeavors, Lowell worked as a manager and officer in several corporations for the majority of his career. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of many community and college organizations.
Honoring his service to his country, Lowell served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army 11th Airborne Division. He took pride in teaching new recruits the skills of a paratrooper. He was honorably discharged in 1956. His commitment to excellence extended into every facet of his life.
Lowell was known for his warm and engaging personality. A true people person, he was kind and generous, always willing to lend a helping hand or a supportive ear to those in need. His friends and family understood that he would do anything for them, demonstrating a deep love and commitment.
A talented individual, Lowell had diverse interests and hobbies that included aviation, poetry, and art. He found enjoyment in visiting casinos and had a passion for travel, enriching his life through new experiences and cherished memories.
Lowell's proudest accomplishment was being a wonderful father, a role that brought him immense joy and satisfaction. He leaves behind his loving wife, Nancy Zea; his children, Marjory (Robert) Champion, Michelle Brown, Michael (Elizabeth) Zea, Chris (Curt) Ruhlman, Craig (Pam) Mueller, and Dale (Michelle) Mueller; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Maxine Zea; and a host of other family members and friends who deeply appreciated his presence in their lives.
Lowell will be remembered for his kindness, dedication, and the love he shared with all who were fortunate enough to know him. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mabel Lucille Zea; father, Byron Russell Zea; siblings, Donna Zea and Earl Zea; and son-in-law, Rick Brown.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2025 at Dardenne Presbyterian Church, 7400 S. Outer Rd. 364, Dardenne Prairie, MO 63368. It will be held in 'The Rock' church on the Dardenne Presbyterian property. A visitation will begin at 10am with a service at 11am. Burial will follow immediately at the new cemetery located behind the sanctuary.
Memorial contributions may be made in Lowell's honor to the Helping Hands outreach ministry at Dardenne Presbyterian church.
