Mary T. (Krupa) Hohowski, age 91, went home to Jesus on Wednesday, June 6th, 2018 with her
son Chris at her side. She was born August 30th, 1926 in New York City, New York to Anton
and Pauline (Melotik) Krupa. Mary met and married her beloved, Chester (Chet) Hohowski in
1961 and together the raised their only child Chris.
Mary grew up in the hard working immigrant neighborhood of the Lower East Side of
Manhattan where scrubbing the sidewalks and steps of her building instilled in her the
godliness of cleanliness that she would keep all her years. A tough life, enjoyed with the simple
pleasures of the local delights such as ice creams sodas, street games, laughing with her sister
and friends down by the East River. She left school early to help support her family and
eventually worked for the famed NY telephone company as an information operator.
After marrying she moved with Chet out to NewYork's Long Island where Chris was raised.
Focused her efforts on keeping a fine home, she enjoyed creating latch hook rugs, and some
simple travel with her family throughout the Northeast, Midwest and Eastern Canada. An avid
baseball fan of the NY Mets after her beloved Brooklyn Dodgers headed out west.
Mary came out to Missouri to live with Chris after Chet passed, helped design and furnish a
suitable home where she honed her furnishing and decorating skills. She had a passion for
classic cinema and television throughout her life especially Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney,
Shirley Temple, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, and Tyrone Power. Laughing heartily to near
exhaustion at Lucille Ball and the Golden Girls. And could endlessly intensely watch anything
with babies or small animals. Especially in her latter years she was so abundantly full of life.
A lover of gardening and animals she loved flowers and cared for many cats and dogs over the
years: Sandy, Tiger, Laddie, Midnight, Smokey, Spotty, and Gracie.
A lifelong Catholic, she was a member of St. Vincent de Paul in NY, and ICD & Assumption
church in Missouri with an especial devotion to the Little Flower and St. Jude.
In addition to her parents Anton and Pauline, Mary was also proceeded to everlasting life by
her Uncle Frank, Teta Anna, her loving husband of 39 years Chester and friends Anna Barcak
and Jeanne Kirsch.
She is survived by Chris Hohowski, sister Rosemarie Leone, nephew Anthony Leone and
nieces Gina Miale and Julie Leone, and cousin Josie Bravchok. Also special friends Christina
Stroyan and Ronnie Wells and Right at Home caregivers Deb Gewehr and Judy Clifford.
