Melvin Eugene Shafer, age 87, of Saint Charles, Missouri passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2021. He was born in Madison County, Missouri on June 1, 1934 to Oliver and Dora Shafer (nee King).
Melvin is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sandra Nell Shafer; daughters, Susan (Jim) Hoskins, Sharon (Dan) Thelen, and Stacy (Allen) Cresswell; grandchildren, Lindsey, Caleb, Seth (Brittany), Helen (Taylor), Mercy, Olivia (Eric), Emmett, Jesse, Courtney, Brenna, Grayson, and Lily; great-grandchildren, Daniel, Isabel, Alivia, Josephine, Margot, Cassian, Quentin, Louis, and Braylen; and brothers, Lawrence Shafer and Bobby Shafer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Dora Shafer; sisters, Minnie Toppins, Flora Toppins, and Ina Chmela; and his aunt and uncle, Ethel and Ben McDowell, who became legal guardians after the death of his parents.
Melvin served his country with honor in the United States Army, from 1957-1959. He loved the Lord, and served in his church for decades. Melvin loved traveling to the west, especially the mountain ranges. He loved Gospel music, and sang in a quartet for many years. Melvin was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A service honoring Melvin's life will be held at Grace Baptist Church of St. Charles, 3601 Ehlmann Road, St. Charles, MO, 63301, on Sunday, January 16th, 2022. He will be laid to rest in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Fredericktown, Missouri.
