Michael Kenneth Tate

February 17, 1937 — December 27, 2024

Creve Coeur, Missouri

Michael Kenneth Tate, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on December 27, 2024, in Creve Coeur, Missouri, after 87 years of life fully lived. Born on February 17, 1937, in St. Louis, Missouri, Michael was known for his feisty personality, unwavering work ethic, and infectious sense of humor. He cherished and maintained the friendships formed throughout his childhood, attending All Souls Catholic School and graduating from Chaminade High School in the class of 1955.

Michael dedicated over 40 years of his life as a machinist at the Doris Company before venturing into new territory as the owner of "The Green Onion" restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks, where he took immense pride in creating many of the recipes that dazzled his customers. His creativity shone through not only in the kitchen but also in writing funny advertisements for the restaurant, which were a hit on the radio. After retirement, he continued to connect with people at Dierberg's, where his dedication to customer service earned him numerous awards.

A man of many interests, Michael had a deep love for sharing a beer with his friends and family talking about Cardinals baseball. Additionally, he enjoyed cooking, soccer, and golf. He was also an accomplished ballroom dancer, with several awards to his name, showing his spirited nature and desire to embrace life's joys. The mountains called to him, and he found solace and happiness while camping and fishing, memories that will forever be cherished by his daughters, Cheryl and Michelle. They fondly remember the camping trips in the Rocky Mountains, barbecues, and moments filled with laughter and love. He enjoyed traveling, and a highlight of his travels was his trip to Israel. Later in life, he made many visits to Las Vegas with his friends.

Michael served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Reserves, demonstrating his loyalty and commitment, traits that he extended to his family and friends. He was most proud of his family, who were his greatest joy. He leaves behind his cherished daughters, Cheryl (Steven) Corwin and Michelle (Thomas) Dorsey; his brother, Harry (Gail) Tate III; and his grandchildren, Courtney (Ryan Klotz) Dowdall, Aaron (Libby) Dowdall, Ryan Kelley, and Brett (Susan) Kelley, along with his beloved great-granddaughters, Birdie Kelley and Aliza Dowdall. Michael also leaves behind his former wife and mother of his daughters, Barbara Bland, as well as several nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.

He was predeceased by his parents, Harry Tate, Jr. and Margaret Tate, his wife Mary Tate, and his sister, Mary Ellen (Ray) Moser, who all hold a special place in his heart. He cherished fond memories of living with his grandparents, Pop and Nina Schlueter, during the war.

A visitation to honor Michael's memory will be held on January 4, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home in St. Peters, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM. Michael’s legacy will continue through the many lives he touched and the wonderful memories he leaves behind. His love of Western movies, especially those featuring John Wayne and Clint Eastwood, and his appreciation for music, particularly John Denver, will remind us all of his larger-than-life presence.

As we remember Michael, we celebrate a man who truly embraced life, taught others the importance of human connection, and inspired everyone around him with his passionate spirit. He will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Memorial contributions in Michael's honor may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Louis.
