Ret. Major Dennis "Denny" Long

Retired Major Dennis "Denny" Long, age 86, of Saint Peters, Missouri, passed away on September 25, 2024. Born on January 19, 1938, in Saint Louis, Missouri, he was the son of Eugene and Dorothy Long (nee Yeoman).

Denny dedicated over four decades of his life to law enforcement, starting his career with the Saint Louis City Police in 1960, where he served in the mobile reserve. His career continued with the St. Louis County Police, where he ascended to the rank of Major and served as Chief of Detectives. He played a pivotal role in establishing the bomb squad while with the St Louis County Police Department. He later joined the St Peters Ranger Division and contributed significantly as the head instructor for the Missouri Conservation Department, where he taught hunter safety classes.

In recognition of his character and expertise, Denny was chosen to attend the 120th session of the FBI Academy. His commitment to public service and safety left a lasting impact in the community.

Denny was passionate about various activities, including fishing, boating, shooting, and collecting John Wayne memorabilia. Above all else, he cherished his family and dogs. He held a deep devotion to his faith, often expressing his love for Jesus.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66+ years, Margaret Long; son Dennis M. Long (Kathy); daughter Cynthia K. Powers (Kevin); grandchildren Nathan Logan, Nicholas Long, Christopher Long (Laura), Hali Shipman (Joe), and Danielle Mills (Zach), Hadley Holt III, Chris (Andrea) Cain, and Heather (Ryan) Malcinski; and 16 great-grandchildren. Denny will be greatly missed by many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Long; mother, Dorothy Long; daughter, Michele Cain; and grandchild, Erica Harter.
