Richard J. Smith, age 79, passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2018. He was born on June 16, 1938 to Stephen and Anna (Mikita) Smith in Youngstown, Ohio. On May 26, 1967, Richard married the love of his life Margaret Ann (Peggy) Humphreys. Together they had four beautiful children to share their lives together.
Richard was a strong advocate of the Catholic faith as was evident in the decades of service he spent volunteering at Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service, as a tenured lecturer at Sts. Joachim and Ann Parish and as a former Fourth Degree Knight. Additionally, he was a past president at the Harvester Optimist Club and JASSS Club. In 2009, Richard received the Saint Charles County "50 Over Fifty Community Shaper's Award." He was also an avid car enthusiast, spending many hours at a variety of new and classic car shows. He collected car brochures, car models, and other various car collections.
Richard's career began in 1957 in Youngstown, Ohio as a pipe inspector for Youngstown Sheet and Tube Steel Mill. Richard demonstrated a strong work ethic and continued to develop his craft while building his career. He quickly advanced to the level of an electrical draftsman. He graduated in 1963 with a degree in electrical engineering from Youngstown University. Later in 1963, Richard moved from Youngstown, Ohio to St. Louis when he made the move to join the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation as an electrical engineer. Through the many company acquisitions, Richard maintain his position with every merger that took him through his 35-year career journey to his retirement from Lucent Technologies in 2001.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Margaret "Peggy" (Humphreys) Smith; children, Stephen, John (Kelly), Mary, Joseph (Kimberley); grandchildren, Julianna, Jessica, Anthony and Benjamin; great-granddaughter, Faith; siblings, Mary Louise (Jim) Buck, Ruthie (the late Robert) Troxil and Loretta Smith.
The family will receive guests Monday, February 26, 2018, from 3-7pm at Newcomer, Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, 837 Mid Rivers Mall Dr., St. Peters. A Funeral Mass at 10am, Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at Sts. Joachim and Ann Catholic Church, St. Peters with visitation one hour prior to mass. Burial to follow at Our Lady Catholic Cemetery.
Peggy and her family would like to extend a special thank you to Mount Carmel Nursing Home for their kind and compassionate care of Richard. Additionally, the family wants to extend their appreciation and gratitude for the incredible attention and care they received from the wonderful staff at St. Joseph's Acute Care Unit.
