Riley Mack Sheffield, born on February 26, 1946, left this world on December 14, 2024, but he will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him. A truly remarkable man, Riley was not only celebrated for his academic and professional achievements but also cherished for his immense kindness and loving spirit.
Riley began his career as a counselor and work evaluator, through which he dedicated himself to helping others. His passion for chess led him to write "Tension in the Chess Position" and co-write "The Marshall Gambit in the French and Sicilian Defenses." He was a "Master" in chess, which is the third highest achievement. His brilliance shone brightly when he received the "Best Humorous Contribution" award from the Chess Journalists of America in 1989 for his whimsical piece, "Ottersbach Faces Mr. Brink." These accomplishments were borne from a love of knowledge and a desire to share his insights with the world.
He loved God with all his heart and took any opportunity he could to spread the Gospel with others. Riley enjoyed spending time reading his Bible including his favorite verse John 3:16.
His educational journey was marked by dedication; he graduated from Pattonville High School before attending Flo Valley Junior College, ultimately earning a master's degree in education from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. This pursuit of knowledge mirrored the curiosity he fostered in his family.
Riley's military service as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne of the United States Army from 1964 until 1967 was another testament to his dedication to others and his country. He earned the National Defense Service Medal and a parachute badge, reflecting his courage and commitment during a pivotal time in our nation's history.
Described as a soft-spoken man with a great sense of humor, Riley was a loving husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather, and doting great-grandfather. He held each member of his family close to his heart. His wife stood by him through life's journeys, while his two daughters, Stephanie L. (Steve) Goetz and Kelly M. (Jay) Brown, graciously carried forward the legacy of kindness and warmth that he instilled in them. Riley took immense pride in his six grandchildren - Ashley (Lucas) Reynolds, Cody Miller, Steven (Brandi) Goetz, Josie (Zack) Belfield, Sam Brown, and Emily Brown - and the joy they brought into his life. He delighted in the company of his six great-grandchildren, Logan Reynolds, Landon Reynolds, Violet Reynolds, Mckinley Goetz, Mason Goetz, and Waylon Goetz, as well as the excitement of welcoming another great-grandchild, Baby Belfield.
Riley is also survived by his beloved sister, Rhonda Culver, and a host of other family members and friends who will remember him fondly for his warm spirit and quick wit.
He was preceded in death by his devoted mother, Edna Lockey Sheffield, his father, Oliver Riley Sheffield, and his brother-in-law, Ken Culver. Their memories too will forever intertwine with the legacy he leaves behind.
A visitation in Riley's honor will be held on December 23, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, West County in Chesterfield, Missouri. This will be followed by a funeral service beginning at 1:00 PM, allowing friends and family to gather and reflect on the profound impact he made during his lifetime.
As we commemorate the life of Riley Mack Sheffield, let us remember the joy he brought to every interaction, the laughter he inspired, and the unconditional love he shared with all. He was a beacon of light and goodness by spreading the Gospel wherever he went, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
