Rolland (Mike) Wesley McFarland, Jr., age 83, of Lake St. Louis, Missouri passed away peacefully on January 31, 2025 at his home. He was born on January 28, 1942 to Juanita (Maxine) McFarland (nee Courson) and Rolland W. McFarland, Sr. in Peoria Illinois. The family later resided in Quincy, Illinois. Mike is survived by his wife Linda McFarland (nee Stecker), his two children, Michael W. McFarland and his wife Meg (Moeller), Kelly L. Fletcher and bonus son David M. Deaton and his wife Julie (nee Courtney). He is grandfather to Madison, Lindsey and Jay Fletcher, Cate and Wesley McFarland and Linda’s grandchildren Chase, Mila and Vivian Deaton. He also is survived by his two brothers, Randy and his wife Jane, and Scott McFarland. Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother-in-Law, Uncle, Cousin and Friend.
He was a graduate of Iowa State University with a Masters of Science Degree in Town and Regional Planning and a BS in Landscape Architecture. He moved to St. Louis to work for Sverdrup and Parcel engineering firm where he was the master planner for multiple regional and national projects. The National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis County and he designed and won a national award for the design of the Queeny Park playground in St. Louis County. He also was involved in planning for the Space Shuttle at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the Superconducting Super Collider in Texas and the Boeing assembly plant in Seattle as well as many other major projects for the government and National Highway and Transportation department.
After retiring from Sverdrup, later known as Jacobs Engineering, he enjoyed playing golf at Lake Forest County Club in Lake St. Louis, where he was a member for 20 years. He played with his many friends and had a standing date with his wife Linda on Sundays. Mike was a member of the Lake Forest C.C. 5-man team that in 2002 won the club, then regional tournaments to participate in the Buick Scramble in Florida. He and Linda took many Caribbean vacations to scuba dive and enjoy the relaxation of the beach. He most enjoyed spending time with family and his cocker spaniels, watching Missouri Tiger basketball and football games, as well as watching the St. Louis Cardinals baseball and Kansas City Chiefs football games.
Some time in the spring, there will be a celebration of life ceremony for Mike, with details to come at a later date.
