SHIRLEY NAN HAYNES (Affectionately known as Nan) passed away on March 10 at 12:05 in BJC Hospital St. Peters, Mo. Nan was born on August 11, 1940 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Nan married her sweetheart (William M. Haynes) in Eldorado, Kansas on July 13, 1956.
Their union was blessed with 4 children (Cathy Nan, William II, Annabel Lea, and Marian Diane). The first 4 years of their marriage was spent in Stillwater, Okla. where Bill attended Oklahoma State University. In 1960 the family moved to Phillips, Texas where Bill took a job with Phillips Petroleum company and Nan was a mother and an excellent house wife. Nan took this time to get her GED at a local college.
In 1962, we returned to Stillwater where Bill was given a Dow Fellowship to work on his PhD and Nan was very busy with 4 kids and of course handling her difficult husband. After finishing his PhD work, Nan and Bill and family moved to Cape Girardeau, MO, where Bill became an assistant professor in the Chemistry department. The family moved to the St. Louis area in1968 where Bill took a job with Monsanto's research dept. during this time Nan took a job as an assistant in the anesthesiology department of Missouri Baptist Hospital. Later Nan became an assistant nurse to Dr. Farrell in Washington, Mo.
The family moved to Dayton. Ohio (1976) where Nan worked for a group of doctors and Bill transferred to Monsanto Research Corp.
We moved again to Clear Lake, Texas (1980) where Bill was transferred to Texas City Plant and Chocolate Bayou Plant. At this juncture, Nan asked what she should be doing since I was going to be busy traveling between Plants. I said to her "You have been taking college courses over the past few years so why don't you enroll at the University of Houston which is just 0.5 miles from our house." Nan did exactly that and got her BS degree in 1984! What an accomplishment!! Nan managed a Nursing facility until I was transferred back to St. Louis (1985) to be the Director of the Analytical Science Center.
Sometime in the 1980's Nan began drinking heavily and came to me and declared that she was an alcoholic, and she was going to join AA and get sober! Nan began her journey in 1987 and has been alcohol free for 37 years. I am very proud of her.
Nan and I have worked out at a gym for many years but in 2010 we met Cody Miller who is a Starting Strength coach. Nan began to workout with Cody 4X/week. After a few weeks Cody told Nan that she was very strong and she should compete in the next competition. Nan then won 7 Missouri State meets and then in 2017 Nan won the National title in Orlando, Fl with new records in her age and weight division which still stand today. In 2018 she won the World Title in her age and weight out of 55 countries in Calgary Canada. Also, in 2018 she won the National title again in Spokane, Washington. In Chicago (2019 ) Nan won the National Title again! Quite a remarkable feat for a woman in her late 70's.
Nan Haynes leaves a legacy of 4 children, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and her husband of 67.5 years.
Memorial contributions may be made in Nan's honor to the
