Tom enjoyed painting. golf with his friends, children and grand children, traveling with his wife to exotic locations. In his earlier years, he enjoyed sailing his 14 foot sailboat the USS Drag-bottom. He started camping with his wife and three children in 1968, visiting the many States and National Parks. Toms sense of adventure and traveling was definitely passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Tom Graduated from Kendrick Seminary and landed a job at McDonnell Douglas where he worked in the computer department drawing flow diagrams. He taught himself computer programming and in 1966 was hired as the first staff member of the IT department at the Saint Louis Post Dispatch. While there, Tom Installed the first computer systems and oversaw the design of computer systems to convert the financial, advertising and circulation operations from 1966 to 1971. In later years Tom helped to automate the typesetting process, the most labor intensive process at the paper. he was constantly improving the IT architecture until the early 1980's. The Post Dispatch joined a collaboration with other newspapers to publish the news via Compuserve. The Post started running classified adds on Compuserve in real time. Apparently people had better things to do than waiting for updates at the blazing fast speed of 2400 baud and the collaboration ended. Tom returned to the IT department where he continued to improve processes and equipment until his retirement in 1999.
