Uday Kaulas

Uday Kaulas, age 70, of Mumbai, India, passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2022. He was born in Mumbai, India, on February 29, 1952 to Dattatraya and Mangala Kaulas. Uday was born in a typical Mumbai middle class family. He was the eldest among the three. From the very beginning he was always very active in sports and academics. Since he did so well in school, they progressed him to advanced classes which made him the youngest kid in the class. He completed his premedical courses in Elphinstone college. He continued with his winning streak and got admitted into Topiwala (then Nair) Medical College. Even while navigating rigorous medical school studies, he simultaneously represented his medical school at national level in table tennis. This hobby and sport was cherished by him throughout his life. He was an excellent teacher and would teach young kids to play table tennis in the local sports club. Kids and teenagers would lovingly call him "Guru" at sports club.

After graduating from his medical college, he joined Rajwadi Hospital as medical officer. This is where he met his love of life Pankaja (then Neelam). Pankaja was a nurse in Rajawadi Hospital. They fell in love and married two years later. As a husband he was an extremely supportive and loving man. It wouldn't be wrong to say he was addicted to his wife. He loved her and depended on her. He knew that his success as an admired and loved physician depended on his wife's unwavering support which he enjoyed throughout his life. His clinic is located in Eksar, Borivali in Mumbai. He was loved and admired by his patients not only for his clinical and diagnostic skills but also for his polite bedside manners. His patients would shower him with gifts to express their affection to him. He was very hardworking, curious, and constantly aspiring to learn new advancements in medicine and technology. He kept himself up to date even during the COVID 19 pandemic and continued to practice medicine till the very end of his life.

Because of his kind personality combined with his profession, he got opportunities to help several college going students, financially and morally. These students would go to day or night college and work with him part time. Almost all of these students are successful in their respective fields and give credit for their success to him.

Uday and Pankaja have two children, Deepali and Himanshu. Both are physicians and doing well for themselves. Both of them unequivocally feel that their success and happiness is a result of his grit, moral and financial support. Both of them owe the passion and determination to pursue medicine to him.

As a person, family members, relatives and friends saw him as a cheerful and jovial man. He had the knack of being considerate and hilarious at the same time. His emotional maturity and astute decision making during any crisis was very obvious and will be sorely missed by his family members.

At the age of 70 years, truly with a mindset and energy of a 17 year old (chronological age as his birth date is Feb 29) he accompanied his family to the Dominican Republic for vacation. He passed away during this trip secondary to Guillain Barre Syndrome and cardiac arrest. He was never dependent on anyone prior to passing away and could be as pain free as he had imagined. For his family members he will always be a source of inspiration for an endless number of reasons.

Uday is survived by his wife, Pankaja Kaulas; his daughter, Deepali (Rajesh Kini) Kini, his son, Himanshu (Rucha Karajgikar) Kaulas; his sisters, Mugdha (Amol Surlakar) Surlakar and Geeta (Uday Agni) Agni; his grandchildren, Aanandita Kini, Aaratrika Kini, Neal Kaulas, and Reva Kaulas. He will be dearly missed by many other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dattatraya Kaulas; and his mother, Mangala Kaulas.

The family is requesting that all guests wear face masks due to the surge in COVID-19 cases and other communicable diseases. The family understands this may be inconvenient, but we hope you understand.
