Vanessa Gail Deatherage, age 70, of Saint Charles, Missouri passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2022. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 17, 1952 to Lonnie "Earl" and Ruby Deatherage (nee Dye).
Vanessa loved her family. Though she did not have her own children, she treated her niece and nephews as her own. Throughout her life she had many dogs who she considered to be her babies. I'm sure she's excited to see them again.
Vanessa was smart. She was a great trivia partner because she knew something about everything. She had a way of living her life with the best intentions. She would ask for forgiveness, not permission, and this would typically lead to a laughing fit.
Once her and Merita started laughing you better watch out, because her contagious laugh would have them in stitches until both were crying and one of them would usually pee their pants.
Vanessa spent her life serving the people around her. For many years, she worked in the Missouri Department of Family Services where she was a great leader, and represented the children in the foster care system. As she moved into retirement, she became a caregiver for her father and then her mother. She gave selflessly and took in family on multiple occasions. No hesitations, no questions, no expectations, she simply welcomed them and supported them.
Vanessa had many hobbies, including gardening and creating beautiful flower landscapes. She was a great cook and enjoyed watching cooking shows to continue to learn new recipes. She was also a great artist who created beautiful nature scape paintings, working with stained glass and creating beautiful stained glass pieces.
She was a wonderful Sister, Aunt, Cousin, and Friend who loved unconditionally and we miss her dearly.
Vanessa is survived by sister, Merita (Mitch) Propp; her niece, Ashley (Lucas) Schroeder; her nephews, Justin (Hannah) Brown, Jesse Brown, Blake (Dede) Propp, and Brent Propp; her great-nephews, Lucas Nicolay, Colton Propp; and her great-nieces, Clair Propp, Riley Brown, Delilah Brown. She will be dearly missed by many other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lonnie Earl Deatherage; her mother, Ruby Evelyn Deatherage; and her brother, Steve Deatherage.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a funeral service to follow at 7:00 pm, all on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at St. Peters Chapel, Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 837 Mid Rivers Mall Drive, St. Peters, Missouri 63376. Interment will be private.
