With deep sorrow we announce the passing of our dearly loved family member and wonderful friend, Dr. Virgil L. Malmberg, of Chesterfield, Missouri, on May 25, 2022. He passed peacefully after an ongoing struggle with diminishing health, much due to post-polio syndrome. He was 75 years old.
Virgil was born in Granite City, Ill to Claude and Cleo Malmberg. In spite of having contracted polio at a very young age, Virgil never gave up... and with the special dedication, help and encouragement of his parents, he continued to pursue his goals, conquering the challenges and obtaining amazing achievements.
He attended Granite City High School, where he excelled in every way. He graduated valedictorian, and from high school went on to acquire a degree in physics, earn his medical degree and then went on to become a psychiatrist, serving for two years as Chief Resident of Psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
At that point he entered into psychiatric clinical practice for twenty-four years, then served as medical director of a managed health care facility for seventeen years before retiring in 2012.
In addition to his medical career, after his degree in physics and before pursuing his M.D. and his PhD, he worked for a year at McDonnell Douglas, where he helped program the navigating software for F-14 jet fighters.
Much to the dismay of his employer (and some family and friends), he decided to quit that excellent job to travel full time for unknown income with a newly-created acapella gospel singing group for two years. Virgil did not sing with the group, but directed the service, introduced songs and gave sermons.
It was during that time of traveling together that Virgil became more closely acquainted with one of the singers, his future wife, Linda. They fell in love and were married and had 43 years together before serious illness took the love of his life.
Virgil and Linda enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii, where they made several trips with good friends. Virgil was a life-long learner, loving to read and study and continually learn more. He was brilliant with computers and had a passion for them and any electronic gadgets. You'd never find Virgil without having his electronics close by.
Virgil had an ever present sense of humor along with a strong mischievous streak and he very much enjoyed the reactions he received from it! He was a kind and caring man who helped countless people in his career but also touched every life he ever met in very special, meaningful ways.
Virgil will be missed more than words can express, but at the same time there is comfort knowing he's in a much better place, with the Lord.
He left behind his nephew, Bart (Patricia) Douglas; his niece, Jeanne (Tom) Butkovich; his brother-in-law, Kerry (Kathy) Owen; and his sister-in-law, Jackie (Jeff) Cunningham.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Malmberg; his parents, Claude and Cleo Malmberg; his brother, Robert Myers Sr.; his sister, Helen Powderly; and his nephew, Charles Douglas.
Visitation will be from 10:00am until 11:00am, with a celebration of life service to follow at 11:00am on Friday, June 3, 2022 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, West County Chapel, 2211 Clarkson Rd., Chesterfield, Missouri 63017. Interment will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Glen Carbon, Illinois.
